Three qualify for supervisory committee<\/p>\n

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has been forced to add
\nnine new names to compete for the remaining three posts at the
\ngeneral election supervisory committee after only three out of 22
\ncandidates qualified.<\/p>\n
KPU deputy chairman Ramlan Surbakti said on Monday the
\ncommission would announce within the coming weeks the names of
\nall nine new candidates, which would consist of six public
\nfigures and three academicians.<\/p>\n
The KPU will look for prominent figures who are competent and
\ncommitted to the general election process to be in the
\nsupervisory committee.<\/p>\n
"There are so many qualified and available people out there
\nwho are worthy to sit on the committee, but they seem to be
\nreluctant to register for the job.<\/p>\n
"Therefore we decided to approach possible candidates as we
\nare concerned about the quality of the supervisory committee
\nmembers," said Ramlan.<\/p>\n
The nine candidates will then be introduced for public
\nscrutiny before going through a fit and proper test to be
\nconducted by all nine members of the KPU.<\/p>\n
Based on the fit and proper test on 22 selected candidates on
\nThursday, only Topo Santoso, Rozy Munir and Didik Supriyanto were
\ndeemed eligible.<\/p>\n
The 22 names were chosen out of 517 people who voluntarily
\nregistered for the supervisory committee.<\/p>\n
However, criticism arose after most of the nominees were
\nconsidered lacking in quality and commitment to fill the election
\nsupervisory duties.<\/p>\n
After much pressure, the KPU had signaled last week that it
\nwould consider adding more nominees should the candidates be
\ndeemed unsuitable.<\/p>\n
The supervisory committee is an independent body comprising
\nnine members that will monitor the entire process of the general
\nelection including the ballot counting.<\/p>\n
The KPU expects the National Police to appoint two members,
\nwhile the Attorney General's Office will appoint one member to
\nsit on the committee.<\/p>\n
Indonesia will witness the country's first ever direct
\nelection involving some 130 million voters when the legislative
\nelection falls on April 5, 2004 followed by the presidential
\nelection to be held between June and August.<\/p>",
