        "content": "<p>Three qualify for supervisory committee<\/p>\n<p>Arya Abhiseka, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The General Elections Commission (KPU) has been forced to add<br>\nnine new names to compete for the remaining three posts at the<br>\ngeneral election supervisory committee after only three out of 22<br>\ncandidates qualified.<\/p>\n<p>KPU deputy chairman Ramlan Surbakti said on Monday the<br>\ncommission would announce within the coming weeks the names of<br>\nall nine new candidates, which would consist of six public<br>\nfigures and three academicians.<\/p>\n<p>The KPU will look for prominent figures who are competent and<br>\ncommitted to the general election process to be in the<br>\nsupervisory committee.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;There are so many qualified and available people out there<br>\nwho are worthy to sit on the committee, but they seem to be<br>\nreluctant to register for the job.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Therefore we decided to approach possible candidates as we<br>\nare concerned about the quality of the supervisory committee<br>\nmembers,&quot; said Ramlan.<\/p>\n<p>The nine candidates will then be introduced for public<br>\nscrutiny before going through a fit and proper test to be<br>\nconducted by all nine members of the KPU.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the fit and proper test on 22 selected candidates on<br>\nThursday, only Topo Santoso, Rozy Munir and Didik Supriyanto were<br>\ndeemed eligible.<\/p>\n<p>The 22 names were chosen out of 517 people who voluntarily<br>\nregistered for the supervisory committee.<\/p>\n<p>However, criticism arose after most of the nominees were<br>\nconsidered lacking in quality and commitment to fill the election<br>\nsupervisory duties.<\/p>\n<p>After much pressure, the KPU had signaled last week that it<br>\nwould consider adding more nominees should the candidates be<br>\ndeemed unsuitable.<\/p>\n<p>The supervisory committee is an independent body comprising<br>\nnine members that will monitor the entire process of the general<br>\nelection including the ballot counting.<\/p>\n<p>The KPU expects the National Police to appoint two members,<br>\nwhile the Attorney General&apos;s Office will appoint one member to<br>\nsit on the committee.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia will witness the country&apos;s first ever direct<br>\nelection involving some 130 million voters when the legislative<br>\nelection falls on April 5, 2004 followed by the presidential<br>\nelection to be held between June and August.<\/p>",
