        "content": "<p>Three pillars prevent militarism<\/p>\n<p>From Warta Kota<\/p>\n<p>For 32 years Indonesia was under Gen. (ret) Soeharto. During<br>\nthis period, all choice positions were given to the military or<br>\nthose closely related to the military. Of course the New Order<br>\nregime under Soeharto did gain some success in development.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the Soeharto era is over, the country is in the<br>\nreform era, in which the military has undergone its own reform.<br>\nReformed military personnel are professionals who know their<br>\nplace in a democratic state.<\/p>\n<p>So, it is really unnecessary to harbor suspicion for<br>\npresidential and vice presidential candidates who are former<br>\nmilitary men. They have retired from military service and have<br>\nbecome civilians. It is discriminatory to discredit them by<br>\ntrying to uncover their past mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>During the Old Order and New Order periods, the three<br>\npolitical pillars --  the judiciary, the executive and the<br>\nlegislative, could not perform their functions properly as they<br>\nwere put under the control of the executive.
