Three men injured in party supporters clash in C. Java<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java (JP): At least three people were
\ninjured and one house destroyed when supporters of the United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP) and the National Awakening Party (PKB)
\nclashed Monday evening in Pekalongan, Central Java.<\/p>\n
The incident erupted when a group of PPP supporters passed
\nalong Jl. Raya Kartijan. An alleged group of PKB supporters
\npelted the PPP supporters with stones, wounding three.<\/p>\n
The regency chairman of the PPP, Abdurrahman Tobari, deplored
\nthe incident, saying as Muslims supporters of the two parties
\nshould avoid violence.<\/p>\n
\"I have reported the incident to police. And I hope that PKB
\nleaders will be able to control their supporters.\"<\/p>\n
The chairman of PKB's local chapter, Bisri Romli, denied PKB
\nparty supporters were involved in the attack. He said supporters
\nof another political party attacked the PPP supporters.<\/p>\n
He said PKB members, affiliated with the Nahdlatul Ulama
\nIslamic organization, recently suffered similar attacks when
\nunidentified people ambushed their houses and damaged their cars.<\/p>\n
\"We do not want to clash with anyone, especially since all of
\nus are Muslims. We want to compete fairly in the polls,\" Bisri
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Separately in Semarang, the PKB, the Indonesian Democratic
\nParty of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), the National Mandate Party
\n(PAN) and Partai Damai Kasih Bangsa (Love The Nation Democratic
\nParty) jointly launched an antiviolence campaign.<\/p>\n
Organizer Ahmad Farid said the purpose of the campaign was to
\neducate party supporters to remain united and tolerant of each
\nother despite differences in political views.<\/p>\n
\"We will continue this campaign in other regencies in the
\nprovince to prevent riots before and after the general election.\"<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Central Java Police chief Maj. Gen. Nurfaizi said
\non Tuesday police would launch a number of raids to confiscate
\nillegal weapons and alcohol throughout the province ahead of the
\nJune 7 general election. The raids would be conducted to help
\nprevent riots among supporters of the 48 political parties
\ncontesting the polls, he said.<\/p>\n
Police also will step up street patrols and checks of new
\narrivals to the province. He said people arriving from other
\nprovinces were obliged to report to the nearest neighborhood
\nchief within 24 hours of their arrival.<\/p>\n
He said police had learned from the riots in the regencies of
\nCilacap and Kebumen late last year and would not repeat the same
\nmistakes.<\/p>\n
\"There are indications this province is still quite vulnerable
\nto provocateurs,\" Nurfaizi said in Purwokerto. (har\/45\/prb)<\/p>",
