        "content": "<p>Three killed, houses destroyed by floods<\/p>\n<p>Nana Rukmana, The Jakarta Post, Indramayu, West Java<\/p>\n<p>Three people were killed and tens of thousands of homes were<br>\ndamaged after floods swept through a large part of Indramayu<br>\nregency this week, officials have said.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of hectares of paddy fields, fish and shrimp ponds<br>\nwere also destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Head of Indramayu administration's social welfare office Didi<br>\nJunaedi said that two residents were killed after being swept<br>\naway by strong currents in Losarang district and another was<br>\nbitten by a snake in Jatibarang district.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the floods also inundated 232,378 hectares of<br>\nfish and shrimp ponds and 26,759 hectares of paddy fields. The<br>\nfloods inundated a total of 185 villages, in 25 out of the 28<br>\ndistricts in Indramayu regency.<\/p>\n<p>The worst-hit area was Kandanghaur district where floodwaters<br>\nleft 5,730 homes, 4,861 hectares of paddy fields and 481 fish<br>\nponds submerged. The 10 districts worst hit by floods were<br>\nKandanghaur, Losarang, Sukra, Indramayu, Bongas, Anjatan,<br>\nJuntinyuat, Sindang, Lelea and Lohbener.<\/p>\n<p>Didi said that material losses due to the floods could reach<br>\nRp 25 billion (US$3 million). \"Material losses includes damage to<br>\nhouses and paddy fields,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, although the water is starting to recede,<br>\nflood victims still needed food.<\/p>\n<p>\"Help in the form of rice and side dishes, like instant<br>\nnoodles and canned sardines, are needed to fulfill their daily<br>\nintake, because the floods had prevented them from working,\" Didi<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He said that seven districts, badly hit by floods, had<br>\nreceived 410 tons of rice and 140 cartons of instant noodles from<br>\nthe Indramayu regental administration. The governor of West Java<br>\nhad also contributed Rp 100 million.<\/p>\n<p>Besides that, the Indonesian Red Cross handed over 1,000<br>\ncartons of instant noodles, PT Sanghyang delivered 200 kilograms<br>\nof rice and 30 cartons of noodles, Buddha Tzu Chi Foundation gave<br>\n400 tons of rice and the Lions Club of Cirebon donated 10 cartons<br>\nof instant noodles.<\/p>",
