Three injured in Wamena rioting<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Two civilian and one policeman were
\nseverely injured in a clamor which broke out in the town of
\nWamena, Jayawijaya regency, on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Antara said the police officer was chief Sgt. S Tamaela, while
\none of the civilians was identified as Nasrun. The identity of
\nthe other civilian was not known.<\/p>\n
The three are now being treated for severe wounds at the
\nintensive care unit of the local hospital.<\/p>\n
The officer suffered stab wounds to his right arm, while one
\nof Nasrun's ears was severely cut. The other patient was injured
\nin the buttocks. Witnesses said an arrow hit him from behind.<\/p>\n
The clash erupted after locals were informed that the chief of
\nthe Papuan civilian militia (Satgas) in Wamena was shot dead by
\npolice at the airport.<\/p>\n
Approximately 2,500 Satgas members, with arrow, swords and
\nother sharp weapons entered the town of Wamena soon after hearing
\nthe rumor. They besieged the Jayawijaya Police station.<\/p>\n
A brawl then ensued and warning shots from the police failed
\nto break it up.<\/p>\n
The mob dispersed after learning that their chief, Elyas
\nBabinggen, was still alive.<\/p>\n
The situation had returned to normal by Saturday evening but
