        "content": "<p>Three injured in Wamena rioting<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Two civilian and one policeman were<br>\nseverely injured in a clamor which broke out in the town of<br>\nWamena, Jayawijaya regency, on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Antara said the police officer was chief Sgt. S Tamaela, while<br>\none of the civilians was identified as Nasrun. The identity of<br>\nthe other civilian was not known.<\/p>\n<p>The three are now being treated for severe wounds at the<br>\nintensive care unit of the local hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The officer suffered stab wounds to his right arm, while one<br>\nof Nasrun&apos;s ears was severely cut. The other patient was injured<br>\nin the buttocks. Witnesses said an arrow hit him from behind.<\/p>\n<p>The clash erupted after locals were informed that the chief of<br>\nthe Papuan civilian militia (Satgas) in Wamena was shot dead by<br>\npolice at the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 2,500 Satgas members, with arrow, swords and<br>\nother sharp weapons entered the town of Wamena soon after hearing<br>\nthe rumor. They besieged the Jayawijaya Police station.<\/p>\n<p>A brawl then ensued and warning shots from the police failed<br>\nto break it up.<\/p>\n<p>The mob dispersed after learning that their chief, Elyas<br>\nBabinggen, was still alive.<\/p>\n<p>The situation had returned to normal by Saturday evening but<br>\nWamena remained tense.
