        "content": "<p>Three elephants die in action<\/p>\n<p>BUKIT KEMUNING, Lampung: Three elephants that security<br>\nauthorities used to destroy illegal coffee plantations have died<br>\nin action, a press reports said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear why the trained animals died but the operation&apos;s<br>\nleader, Subari Effendi, said that the elephants might have been<br>\nill before they were brought in to uproot coffee trees planted by<br>\nsemi-nomadic farmers on reserved forests.<\/p>\n<p>The crackdown on illegal plantations involved dozens of people<br>\nand 17 elephants, which are alumnae of the elephant training<br>\ncenter in Way Kambas, Central Lampung.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The elephants&apos; deaths surprised all of us,&quot; Subari told<br>\nAntara. &quot;We did everything possible to save their lives.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The operation, which started on Feb. 11, has destroyed over<br>\n1,000 hectares of coffee plantations and 225 makeshift houses of<br>\nthe farmers.
