Stabat (ANTARA) - At least three districts in Langkat Regency, North\nSumatra, have been inundated by floods following heavy rainfall that\ncaused several rivers in the area to overflow.<\/p>\n
Ansyari, Acting Head of the Langkat Regency Regional Disaster\nManagement Agency (BPBD), said in Stabat on Tuesday that the heavy\nrainfall and overflowing rivers caused protective river embankments to\nbreach at several points.<\/p>\n
As a result, at least three districts have been flooded: Batang\nSarangan, Padang Tualang, and Tanjung districts.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe flooding began with high-intensity rainfall falling continuously\nin the upstream area since Monday, causing river discharge to rise\nsharply and overflow into residential neighbourhoods. The situation was\nworsened by the breaching of protective river embankments at several\npoints, so the water spread more quickly into settlements,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In Padang Tualang district, he added, conditions were further\naggravated by high tides at the river mouth, preventing water from\nflowing smoothly to the sea and instead pushing it back over the\nland.<\/p>\n
In Padang Tualang, three hamlets have been significantly affected:\nHamlet 12 of Benteng Rejo, with 600 households affected by floodwater\nreaching 30\u2013120 cm in depth.<\/p>\n
Hamlet 11 of Tegal Rejo has 250 households affected with water levels\nof 25\u201395 cm, while Somor Bor hamlet has 260 households affected with\nwater levels of 20\u201330 cm.<\/p>\n
\u201cData on the impact in Batang Sarangan and Tanjung Pura districts is\nstill being compiled and will be reported in full as soon as it is\ncollected,\u201d Ansyari said.<\/p>\n
He said BPBD Langkat continues to monitor developments in the field\ndirectly across the three affected districts.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe BPBD team has gone directly to the locations bringing logistical\naid and equipment for the distribution of assistance or for evacuation\nif needed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
BPBD Langkat is also coordinating with village and district\ngovernments, the police sector, the military district command, and\ncommunity health centres in each area to prepare for a joint\nresponse.<\/p>\n
Personnel and emergency equipment to anticipate evacuation needs are\non standby should conditions deteriorate or the embankments breach\nagain.<\/p>\n
