Three die, three others go missing in Bali flood<\/p>\n

At least three people were killed and another three missing after
\na dike burst on the resort-island of Bali due to the continued
\nheavy rains on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The death toll from five-days of torrential rains and the
\nsubsequent flooding throughout Indonesia had reached 18 yesterday
\nevening, including 12 deaths in Greater Jakarta, reports said.<\/p>\n
The victims from Buleleng Regency, some 85 kilometers north of
\nBali's capital Denpasar, were identified as Luh Sukerti, 12, of
\nKabutambahan Village, Ni Made Sukreni, 16, of the Pantai Bukti
\nand Gede Ananta, 6, of Singaraja.<\/p>\n
Ananta died when he and his father became trapped in
\nfloodwaters which surrounded their car.<\/p>\n
Three other unidentified people are believed to have been
\nwashed away in the island's north.<\/p>\n
Buleleng police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Safei said a dike on the
\nTejakulo River failed due to the downpour.<\/p>\n
He said Sukerti, an elementary school student, died after she
\nwas buried by a landslide near her house in East Buleleng. Her
\nbody was recovered on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
Bali provincial police spokesman Ad. Sr. Comr. Y. Suyatmo
\ncalled on people living in coastal areas prone to floods and
\nlandslides to move to safe areas.<\/p>\n
Rescue workers in Situbonda, East Java recovered on Wednesday
\nthe body of Yul, 35, who was killed in the floods that hit the
\nregency on Tuesday. One other victim is still missing.<\/p>\n
Situbondo police precinct chief Sr. Comr. Untung Suharsono
\nsaid the highway connecting Surabaya and Banyuangi was closed due
\nto muddy flood waters one meter deep. Traffic between the two
\ntowns was diverted south.<\/p>\n
About 100 of 275 vehicles are still trapped along a ten-
\nkilometer section of highway in the regency despite the local
\nadministration deploying bulldozers and hundreds of rescue
\nworkers, including 150 police personnel, to help.<\/p>\n
Situbondo resident Ikhwanuddin said all people from the
\ntrapped vehicles had been rescued but the vehicles themselves
\ncould not be removed because a number were snagged by fallen
\ntrees.<\/p>\n
The floods also hit an Islamic boarding school and two
\nelementary schools, closing them.<\/p>\n
A five-year-old child was also drowned in floods in Sidoarjo,
\nwhile the provincial city of Surabaya, Jakarta's second largest
\ncity, was still submerged. Traffic was in chaos.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, remote parts of West Kalimantan were still being
\ninundated by rain with no relief in site as the deluge continued.<\/p>\n
The worst hit was Landak Regency where 20 elementary school
\nbuildings and thousands of houses were flooded. So far, 3,600
\nfamilies have been evacuated to safety.<\/p>\n
Meteorological forecasts predict the heavy rains could
\ncontinue till the end of next February. People have been asked to
\nremain alert to the dangers.<\/p>\n
In East Bandung, West Java, flooding was blamed on the
\nintensive development of housing areas on the slopes of
\nManglayang Mountain and on farmland, decreasing catchment areas
\nin the provincial capital.<\/p>\n
At least three companies are developing housing on the
\nmountain's slopes.<\/p>\n
In the province's north, thousands of hectares of paddy fields
\nin Karawang, Indramayu and Cirebon were submerged raising fears
\nof possible harvest failures in the next three months.<\/p>\n
In central Sumatra, the traffic between Jambi and Riau was
\nparalyzed due to flooding on several sections of the main highway
\nconnecting the two provinces.<\/p>\n
Truck drivers said they would take the western route to
\ncontinue their trip delivering basic commodities.<\/p>",
