Three arrested over Malaysian arms heist<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Malaysian police said on Sunday they had arrested
\nthree men, including two of their own officers, over a weapons
\nheist at a police camp in northeastern Terengganu state.<\/p>\n
\"We have solved the case,\" Terengganu police chief Hussin
\nIsmail told AFP. \"We have arrested two police personnel and one
\nmember of the public.\"<\/p>\n
The officers were from the Kubang Badak police camp where the
\ntheft took place early on Saturday. Police recovered all the
\nstolen arms and ammunition.<\/p>\n
The heist, in which 21 guns and some 645 rounds of ammunition
\nwere stolen, was the third such raid in recent years, heightening
\nfears of militant activity after a Muslim cult stole weapons in
\n2000.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said it was a relief the
\nweapons had been recovered, but that authorities had to prevent
\nsimilar security breaches. \"Action taken must be able to prevent
\na recurrence of such incidents,\" he was quoted as saying by the
\nstate Bernama news agency.<\/p>\n
Abdullah, who was in Terengganu for a separate event and had
\nearlier visited the police camp, said authorities were still
\ninvestigating motives for the theft.<\/p>\n
Hussin earlier dismissed any suggestion of militant activity,
\nsaying the thieves had intended to sell the weapons which
\nincluded 19 Smith and Wesson revolvers and two pistols, a
\nBrowning and a Steyr.<\/p>\n
Police said the weapons and ammunition were found Sunday
\nmorning on the other side of the country, in Malacca state on the
\nsouthwestern coast. -- AFP<\/p>",
