Three arrested for trafficking attempt<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Police arrested three people for allegedly trying to
\ntraffic teenaged girls from Indonesia's tsunami-devastated Aceh
\nprovince to Malaysia, an official said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Col. Bambang Prihadi said the arrests followed reports that
\ntwo 16-year-olds escaped from their captors three months ago as
\nthey were being brought to Medan, North Sumatra, on their way to
\nKuala Lumpur. He had no other details.<\/p>\n
Immediately after the Dec. 26 tsunami smashed into Asian
\ncoastlines, killing or leaving missing 216,000 people in 12
\nnations, international aid organizations expressed concern that
\ntraffickers would try to exploit those orphaned by the killer
\nwaves.<\/p>\n
No cases were ever confirmed in Indonesia, where the crime
\ncarries a maximum punishment of 15 years.<\/p>\n
Achmad Sofyan, executive director of the non-governmental
\nCenter for Study and Child Protection, said the case surrounding
\nthe two Acehnese teens came to the attention of authorities after
\nthe girls escaped from their captors.<\/p>\n
One fled at the Medan Immigration office while the traffickers
\nwere preparing her passport and the other ran away when her bus
