        "content": "<p>Thousands still squat in forests<\/p>\n<p>KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: A transmigration official has<br>\npromised that his office will try to resettle 6,835 families of<br>\nslash-and-burn farmers living inside the province&apos;s forests,<br>\nthreatening the their environment.<\/p>\n<p>Antara quoted Tigor Sinaga, the head of the provincial office<br>\nof the Ministry of Transmigration, as saying here Thursday that<br>\n16,913 other families were squatting on the forests&apos; fringes.<\/p>\n<p>His office is launching a campaign to encourage the squatters<br>\nto move to Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Irian Jaya and other<br>\nprovinces.<\/p>\n<p>The office has promised to give families which transmigrate<br>\nvoluntarily a house, clean water, land and seeds.<\/p>\n<p>About 10,000 families have moved to other provinces since the<br>\ntransmigration project began in 1984.
