Thousands rush to Senayan to see test results<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Thousands of senior high school students, who
\ncompleted the 1995 matriculation exams for entrance into state
\nuniversities, converged on Senayan's main stadium on Saturday,
\njostling to obtain the lists which contained the results of their
\nlabor.<\/p>\n
As in previous years, the air at the stadium was colored by
\nvarying moods. Many students were laughing because their names
\nwere printed on the paper, while others looked sad as they
\nrealized that their names were not on the list.<\/p>\n
A female student kissed the earth and embraced the paper
\ntightly as soon as she knew her name was included.<\/p>\n
\"Alhamdulillah (praise God), I am so happy. I have to tell my
\nparents now,\" Dillah said with tears in her eyes as she rushed to
\nthe nearest public telephone.<\/p>\n
After she had made her call, Dillah ran back to join her
\nfriends, who congratulated her.<\/p>\n
\"I choose the Faculty of Economics from the University of
\nIndonesia,\" Dillah, who was a student in a private high school in
\nEast Jakarta, said.<\/p>\n
A male student, wearing blue jeans, jumped and shouted to his
\nfriends that his name was printed.<\/p>\n
\"I am very surprised,\" Andri said, adding that from the
\nbeginning he had been pessimistic of being accepted to a state
\nuniversity.<\/p>\n
\"I am not so bright,\" Andri, who chose the Faculty of Law in
\nGadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, said.<\/p>\n
Another male student quietly folded the paper and put it in
\nhis pocket.<\/p>\n
\"I am not surprised. I realize it is very difficult to enter a
\nstate university,\" Agus said, adding that he had also registered
\nhis name at a private university in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
A group of female students left the area as soon as they knew
\ntheir names were not printed.<\/p>\n
\"I can't say anything, the exam was the only chance for me to
\nstudy at a university. My parents cannot afford to pay for me to
\nstudy in a private university because it is very expensive,\" Lina
\nsaid sadly.<\/p>\n
\"I will try again next year,\" Indah said optimistically,
\nadding that this year she might take a computer course.<\/p>\n
Eight students in Jakarta did not pass, having been
\ndisqualified because they were caught cheating during the exams,
\nwhich were held last month, an official of the local committee
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"The signatures on their answer sheets were very different
\nfrom those on their registration papers,\" Soesmalijah Soewondo,
\nthe examination committee chief for Jakarta, said.<\/p>\n
According to Soesmalijah, Jakarta participants for this year,
\nnumbered 64,211. This amount represents a decrease compared with
