Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has
revealed a surge in fraud in the financial sector exploiting artificial
intelligence (AI). Up to June 2026, OJK had received 1,379 fraud reports
suspected of involving the use of AI.

Dicky Kartikoyono, Head of the Executive Board for the Supervision of
Financial Services Business Conduct, Education, and Consumer Protection
(PEPK) at OJK, said technological developments have made fraud methods
increasingly sophisticated, complicated and complex.

“We must be increasingly careful with the various forms of financial
transaction fraud, which pose a serious threat because their numbers
continue to rise,” Dicky said during a virtual press conference on
Monday (7/9/2026).

According to Dicky, scammers are now exploiting various technologies
to carry out their actions, including AI, fake identities and mule
accounts. These methods can also be carried out through various digital
channels and involve cross-border networks.

“In addition, the applications used are increasingly sophisticated,
including the use of AI, fake identities, mule accounts, and fictitious
identities that can be forged even more convincingly,” he said.

One method that now needs to be watched is deepfake technology, which
can be used to falsify a person’s identity, including creating audio or
facial content resembling the real person.

“Up to June 2026, OJK has received 1,379 fraud reports suspected of
using AI,” Dicky said.

He said the use of AI makes fraud harder to recognise because
perpetrators can create identities and communications that appear
convincing.

“We can even see that voice cloning and face cloning are widely
used,” he added.

Beyond deepfakes, OJK has also found the use of fake calls, bogus
telephone numbers, and impersonation of particular parties. Fraud can
also appear in shopping transactions through e-commerce ecosystems.

OJK also reminded the public about offers of AI-based trading robots.
Dicky stressed that the use of advanced technology does not
automatically make an activity legal.

“But all of these are really scams, fraud through the various methods
mentioned earlier,” he said.

OJK Strengthens Fraud Detection

Facing these evolving methods, OJK and the Task Force for the
Eradication of Illegal Financial Activities (Satgas PASTI) continue to
strengthen prevention and enforcement efforts.

Dicky said the financial services industry is being pushed to keep
developing technology, from early detection to transaction monitoring
and the handling of customer complaints.

“Starting from proactive early detection at the front line, then
looking at the whole ecosystem through to handling complaints. Of
course, the foremost effort is education and outreach to the public,” he
said.

OJK is also strengthening the risk-based application of customer due
diligence (CDD) and enhanced due diligence (EDD). Checks are carried out
not only when customers open accounts, but also throughout the ongoing
relationship with them.

In addition, OJK continues to update its blacklist within the digital
financial ecosystem and encourages real-time transaction monitoring so
that suspicious activity can be identified and followed up more
quickly.

However, Dicky acknowledged these efforts remain challenging because
perpetrators continue to refine their fraud techniques.

“It is indeed a cat-and-mouse chase; those committing digital crimes
keep strengthening the forms of their crimes,” he said.

OJK and Satgas PASTI have also intensified cyber patrols of social
media, websites and applications suspected of offering illegal financial
activities. OJK is coordinating with various digital platforms,
including Google, Meta and TikTok, to identify content or activities
classified as illegal.

According to Dicky, OJK is also discussing the implementation of
scam-warning pop-ups in mobile banking applications as one effort to
strengthen consumer protection.
",
