Thousands of children left uneducated<\/p>\n
BEKASI: At least 76,233 children of the 1.7 million population
\nof Bekasi, have not started elementary school Mayor Akhmad
\nZurfalih said on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"Generally they are from families with a low income so they do
\nnot have the financial support to be properly educated,\" Akhmad
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He added that some of the families did not really want their
\nchildren to go to school but suggested that further research was
\nneeded to uncover why this was the case.<\/p>\n
The data provided by the mayoralty also indicates that at
\nleast 277,990 of the population didn't finish elementary school.<\/p>\n
The chairwoman of the City Council Commission E for education
\nand social welfare affairs, Tati Ruswartati, urged the city
\nadministration to allocate Rp 30 billion (US$3.5 million) or 5
\npercent of the 2004 budget, a total of Rp 600 billion, for a fund

Water supplies will be cut on Saturday from 2 p.m to 11 p.m.

JAKARTA: Residents of five subdistricts in South Jakarta --
\nBintaro, Srengseng Sawah, Tanjung Barat, Ciganjur and North
\nPetukangan -- urged the mayor to build public health centers for
\nthem.<\/p>\n
The residents first made the demand five years ago, but still
\nno action has been taken.<\/p>\n
\"The mayor is discriminating against us. We have a right to
\naffordable health services at a public health center. We can't
\nafford to go to the hospital,\" said Imas, a resident of Bintaro
\non Friday.<\/p>\n
\"We have integrated health services in community units and
\nneighborhood units, but they can't provide optimum health
\nservice,\" she said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.<\/p>\n
Nining, a resident of Tanjung Barat subdistrict, said she had
\nto spend extra money on an ojek (motorcycle taxi) because the
\nnearest public health center was located in another subdistrict.<\/p>\n
Mayor Dadang Kafrawi called on the mayoralty's health office
\nto work with the development planning office to find plots of
\nland in the five subdistricts suitable for public health centers.
