Thousands mark Poso riots<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi: Thousands of Poso residents packed the
\nDarussalam Mosque here on Wednesday to commemorate the first
\nanniversary of the Poso riots.<\/p>\n
Participants were mostly Poso residents who are sheltering in
\nthe provincial capital. They held prayers and chanted verses from
\nthe Koran during the gathering.<\/p>\n
The event coordinator, Syaifullah Amir Jafar, said the
\ncommemoration was held to offer the traumatized refugees a morale
\nbooster, and he called on them to resume their normal lives in
\ntheir hometown.<\/p>\n
"We can't let ourselves be preoccupied with the prolonged
\nmisery and trauma in the refugee camps. You should return to Poso
\nto rebuild from the ruins left the unrest," he told the
\ngathering.<\/p>\n
Separately, dozens of students from the Indonesian Muslim
\nStudents Association (HMI) staged a peaceful demonstration in
\nfront of the gubernatorial office, demanding severe punishment
\nfor those involved in the riot, which left 200 people dead.<\/p>\n
The district court here sentenced Fabianus Tibo, Dominggus da
\nSilva and Marianus Riwu to death last month following their
\nconviction on manslaughter charges related to the riots which
\nerupted on May 23 last year. (24)<\/p>",
