        "content": "<p>Thousands flunk elementary grades<\/p>\n<p>PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan: More than 33,600 students in<br>\nstate and Islamic elementary schools will have to repeat the<br>\ngrade this year.<\/p>\n<p>This is from 299,422 students studying at 814 elementary<br>\nschools in the area, according to head of the Central Kalimantan<br>\noffice of the Ministry of Education and Culture Karno Suryatma.<\/p>\n<p>Karno attributed the high number of failures to a lack of<br>\nqualified teachers and the low economic level of the parents.<\/p>\n<p>\"Poor awareness of the purpose of education among parents has<br>\nalso exacerbated the situation,\" Karno was quoted as saying by<br>\nAntara yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said his office would gradually improve the quality of<br>\nteachers and the education on offer.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will also help the students and parents through a foster<br>\nparent program and other scholarship schemes,\" he said. \"We want<br>\nthe number of pupils repeating their grade to gradually decrease<br>\nin the coming years.\" (sur)<\/p>",
