Thousands feared malnourished<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Thousands of children across
\nSoutheast Sulawesi are believed to be suffering from
\nmalnutrition, the result of poverty and a lack of nutritional
\nknowledge on the part of parents.<\/p>\n
Andi Norma, an adviser to the provincial Civil Servants' Wives
\nAssociation, said on Tuesday the provincial administration should
\nrevive a supplemental food program for students in order to fight
\nmalnutrition.<\/p>\n
\"Otherwise the young people in this province will suffer
\ndamage to their intellectual and physical development,\" she said
\nto association members, who were taking part in a cooking
\ncompetition.<\/p>\n
The supplemental food program was sponsored by the central
\ngovernment for two years, but was halted when regional autonomy
\ncame into effect last year.<\/p>\n
\"I know that the program costs billions of rupiah, but don't
\nthink just about the money. We should consider the quality of our
\nyoung people, which cannot be bought by money,\" Andi said.<\/p>\n
She said similar programs had been proposed by a number of
\nmayors and regents, but had been rejected by the provincial
