Thousands bury reform activist<\/p>\n
SURAKARTA, Central Java: Thousands of people, mostly students,
\nthronged to the reburial of reform activist Leonardus \"Gilang\"
\nNugroho Iskandar who was found dead in East Java last month.<\/p>\n
Mourning for the activist who was also known as a street
\nsinger, the crowd marched down the city streets from the
\nsecretariat of the Solo Students Reform Committee, causing heavy
\ncongestion, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Gilang's body was reburied on Saturday in a public cemetery in
\nPurwalaya, near the city which over the past three months
\nwitnessed student demonstrations for reform which often escalated
\ninto clashes with security personnel.<\/p>\n
Gilang, 24, went missing two days before his body was found in
\na forested area in Magetan, East Java, on May 23, 1998. According
\nto his mother Budiarti, Gilang went with an \"important person\"
\nwho offered him a job in the East Java city of Madiun.<\/p>\n
A man who identified himself as Rudi Solo informed the Magetan
\nPolice Station that he found a body when he was repairing his
\nbroken down car in the forested area between Tawangmangu in
\nCentral Java and Magetan.<\/p>\n
The body was taken to the Magetan hospital and buried three
\ndays later when no one claimed it.<\/p>\n
Gilang's family, who had earlier reported the activist
\nmissing, tracked down his body last Monday. They said results
\nfrom an autopsy showed the cause of death was stab wounds to the
\nlungs and heart, Kompas said.<\/p>\n
His body was exhumed and brought back to Surakarta. Family
\nmembers and friends believe he was killed for his involvement in
\nthe reform movement.<\/p>\n
Student leader Ulin Niam called on the police and the local
\nadministration to handle the alleged murder professionally. (rms)<\/p>",
