Thousands affected by water supply disruption<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Thousands of tap water customers in North, East
\nand some parts of Central Jakarta got no water supplies on
\nTuesday following the collapse of West Tarum Canal dike located
\nin Kali Malang, East Jakarta on Monday evening.<\/p>\n
Due to the collapse of the dike, state-owned Perum Jasa Tirta
\nII halted water supplies to two Jakarta tap water companies.<\/p>\n
This affectively forced the two companies -- PT Thames Pam
\nJaya (TPJ) and PT Pam Lyonnaise Jaya (Palyja) -- to stop
\nproviding clean water supplies to customers in North, East and
\nsome areas in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Many people in those affected areas complained about the
\ndisruption of tap water supplies.<\/p>\n
Tiono, a resident of Serdang subdistrict, Kemayoran district,
\nCentral Jakarta, for example, complained on Tuesday that his tap
\nwater supply had stopped since Monday at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
\"I spent Rp 10,000 to buy water from water traders this
\nmorning for my family,\" Tiono said.<\/p>\n
He added that he tried to contact TPJ, which supplies water to
\ncustomers in eastern Jakarta, but to no avail.<\/p>\n
\"I telephoned the firm several times, but the lines were
\nconstantly engaged,\" Tiono said.<\/p>\n
Another tap water customer, Ali, also grumbled, saying that he
\nand thousands of his neighbors in Perumnas Klender housing
\ncomplex, East Jakarta, had experienced disruption of their water
\nsupplies since Monday evening.<\/p>\n
Ali said many residents had to pay for water from water
\nretailers, except those who owned water jet-pumps.<\/p>\n
City Governor Sutiyoso urged TPJ and Palyja on Tuesday to
\nprovide water-tank trucks to supply affected residents.<\/p>\n
\"Related parties should take the necessary action to overcome
\nthe lack of water supplies,\" Sutiyoso told reporters, but
\nadmitted that he had yet to receive a report about the collapse
\nof the dike.<\/p>\n
TPJ said in a statement on Tuesday that the collapse of the
\ncanal dike had adversely affected its water-processing plants in
\nPulogadung and Buaran, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
It said that as of Tuesday, the two processing plants were
\nrunning at only 25 percent of their full capacity. But it
\npromised that it would do its best to tackle the problem.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Palyja said that the collapse of the dike affected
\nits water-treatment plant in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta, which
\nwas operating at only 40 percent of its full capacity.<\/p>\n
It predicted that they would need one week to repair the
\ncollapsed dike.<\/p>\n
TPJ, a subsidiary of British Thames Water International, has
\nabout 200,000 customers while Palyja, a subsidiary of French
\nLyonnaise des Eaux, has about 300,000 customers. (jun)<\/p>",
