Thousand of workers at S'pore firm walk out<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Approximately 2,000 employees of PT Singamip
\nJaya Enterprise Electronic, a Singapore-based company which
\nproduces electronics spare parts, went on strike yesterday
\ndemanding better treatment.<\/p>\n
The workers, most of them women, held a four-hour-long
\ndemonstration in front the company offices in Cibinong, 47
\nkilometers east of Jakarta.<\/p>\n
One of the striking workers, who requested anonymity, said
\nthat many of the employees' rights, such as a transport
\nallowance, lunch money, annual and maternity leave and overtime
\npay, have not been respected by the company.<\/p>\n
Despite the fact that the company already has a branch of the
\ngovernment-recognized All-Indonesia Workers Union, the workers
\nalso demanded the right to set up an independent union.<\/p>\n
"We are also tied to a contract which puts us in a weak
\nposition," the worker said.<\/p>\n
The company's director, Liem Chei Hok, was not available for
\ncomment yesterday. However, Liem's staff said the workers'
\ndemands were being discussed between representatives of the
\ncompany and the local office of the ministry of manpower.<\/p>\n
More than 20 riot police and security officers kept watch over
\nthe strikers' protest, but there were no incidents.<\/p>\n
One of the strikers said that the workers wanted their demands
\nto be discussed out in the open.<\/p>\n
"We have not chosen any representatives because we are afraid
\nthat worker representatives will be fired by the company," she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The strike ended peacefully at 11 a.m. without any concessions
\nhaving been made by the company.<\/p>\n
"We will take our case to the House of Representatives
\ntomorrow," said one of the workers. (01)<\/p>",
