'This year's exodus better managed'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Despite scores of traffic accidents, Minister of
\nTransportation Haryanto Dhanutirto said yesterday the government
\nhad handled successfully the transportation arrangements for this
\nyear's Idul Fitri holidays.<\/p>\n
"This is mainly due to the public's improved discipline and
\ncooperation with the police," Haryanto said at a post-Idul Fitri
\ngathering at his office.<\/p>\n
All services on land, sea and in the air, functioned properly,
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Three factors contributed to the success: official and public
\ndiscipline in preparing the transportation; good coordination and
\ncommunication among the related ministerial offices; and better
\ntraffic management.<\/p>\n
The minister said that during the peak season of this year's
\nIdul Fitri holidays, 71,000 homeward-bound revelers and 74,000
\nreturnees were transported on the Java-Sumatra crossing, a 54
\npercent increase on last year.<\/p>\n
"But I understand there are still some weaknesses. We will
\nsoon start preparing the services for next year's Idul Fitri with
\nthe cooperation of the Ministry of Public Works."<\/p>\n
Haryanto said that his office had thanked the public,
\ntransportation operators and other related offices for this
\nyear's success.<\/p>\n
The Idul Fitri death toll from road accidents this year was 41
\nby Feb. 11, according to the Ministry of Transportation; other
\nreports gave different figures. This year's holiday season ends
\ntomorrow.<\/p>\n
There were 187 accidents claiming 114 lives and injuring 360
\npeople during the 10-day 1996 Idul Fitri holiday season. (icn)<\/p>",
