Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti has urged educational institutions to implement energy efficiency measures in response to the ongoing crisis, including reducing electricity and water usage, promoting walking or cycling to school for nearby students, and maximising public transport to cut pollution and save energy. He emphasised that in-person learning will continue uninterrupted, with local governments challenged to improve public transport options for safer and more comfortable student commutes. This initiative aims to foster healthier habits and environmental sustainability without compromising educational quality.

Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, stated that
his ministry has issued directives to educational units to enforce
energy efficiency in addressing the crisis conditions. “I think it’s
almost the same as what we mentioned earlier. How to use electricity,
water usage, and also building a healthier culture. So, for example, we
urge that if a child’s home is close to school, if it’s reasonably safe
and comfortable, I think there’s no harm in walking or returning to the
habit of cycling. During the COVID period, children got used to cycling.
Why not continue this habit? It’s healthy, saves energy, and is
environmentally clean,” he explained at the Ministry of Basic and
Secondary Education office in Jakarta on Monday (30/3). Furthermore, he
added that local governments must optimise the use of public vehicles so
that they can be utilised by students. “Then we strive to maximise the
use of public transportation. Nowadays, there’s a tendency for some of
our children to feel more comfortable using motorbikes than public
transport. In my opinion, if there is safe and comfortable public
transport, even in my view, this becomes a challenge for local
governments to improve public transport facilities, so that our children
can go to school using public transport, which is more energy-efficient
and can reduce pollution,” Abdul Mu’ti stressed. He also emphasised that
in-person learning will proceed normally with no implementation of
online learning. “Oh, no (reduction in in-person learning), it will
continue as usual,” he concluded.
",
