US low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has ceased operations after 34 years, marking the end of a pioneer in budget aviation that revolutionised the global industry through its unbundled fare model. The closure, following prolonged financial pressures including two bankruptcies and over $2.5 billion in losses since 2020, has left approximately 17,000 employees jobless and disrupted travel for passengers reliant on its affordable flights. While the airline attempted various rescue measures such as route cuts and seeking government support, the sudden shutdown highlights the vulnerabilities in the aviation sector post-Covid-19.

Low-cost US airline Spirit Airlines has officially halted operations
after 34 years in business. This closure signals the end of one of the
pioneers of the budget flight model, which once transformed the global
aviation industry.

Quoted from AFP on Sunday (3/5/2026), Spirit’s final flight took off
from Detroit and landed safely in Dallas.

The shutdown comes after the airline faced sustained financial
pressures. In the last two years, the company filed for bankruptcy
twice.

However, he acknowledged that the decision to cease operations was an
undesired outcome.

“This is deeply disappointing and not the result that any of us
wanted,” said Davis in an official statement.

Before halting operations, Spirit undertook various rescue efforts.
These included route reductions, labour cost cuts, and seeking new
funding, including potential support from the US government.

Spirit Airlines began its business in the early 1980s as Charter One
Airlines, serving holiday packages. The airline then expanded rapidly by
adopting the “unbundled fares” concept.

This scheme offered low base fares, while additional services such as
baggage, seat selection, and ticket printing were charged
separately.

The business model drew criticism for burdening passengers. However,
this approach proved highly influential and was later adopted by major
airlines through “basic economy” fares.

On its final day of operations, Spirit safely transported over 50,000
passengers. The company also worked to return more than 1,300 crew
members to their home cities.

However, around 17,000 employees lost their jobs due to the closure.
Some of them reportedly learned of the news through media reports.

The Spirit Airlines flight attendants’ union described the closure as
a heavy blow to workers in their statement. Nevertheless, they
highlighted the solidarity built over the years.

In recent years, Spirit has also been burdened by mounting financial
losses. Since 2020, the company has recorded losses exceeding $2.5
billion. This situation was triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact,
surging operational costs, and debt burdens.

The abrupt closure of Spirit Airlines surprised passengers. Some
affected customers, facing flight cancellations, had to seek alternative
travel options amid limited budget choices.

For many passengers, Spirit was known as a simple and affordable
travel option. However, the airline did not offer premium services.
",
