Third day of protests in Dili<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor: Hundreds of protesters on Tuesday took to
\nthe streets here to press for the resignation of the Jakarta-
\nappointed governor.<\/p>\n
For the third straight day, demonstrators demanded the
\nresignation of Jose Osorio Abilio Soares who was appointed
\ngovernor of the former Portuguese territory in 1993.<\/p>\n
The \"Pro-integration and pro-reform East Timorese\" were the
\nlatest group to protest against Abilio.<\/p>\n
Tens of thousands of East Timorese protested on Sunday and
\nMonday, demanding that Abilio step down for threatening to fire
\ncivil servants unless they endorsed the government-sponsored
\nproposal of autonomy for the territory.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, protesters accused Abilio of diverting state
\nfunds.<\/p>\n
They also charged that Soares' statements had created negative
\nsentiment among East Timorese toward the government and the Armed
\nForces.<\/p>\n
\"We give Abilio 15 days to resign,\" they said.<\/p>\n
