Things need to change here<\/p>\n
The article Indonesia mentally ill (Nov. 16) was the best
\narticle I ever read in The Jakarta Post It pinpoints very clearly
\nthe enormous immoral and lawless state this country is in.
\nAlthough I wholeheartedly agree with D. Chandramouli (the Post,
\nNov. 20) that most Indonesians are friendly, kindhearted and
\ngracious, my experience is that underneath this pleasant
\nexterior, controversial behavior has its way.<\/p>\n
The interpretation of the Indonesian mentality is therefore a
\ntricky one. D. Chandramouli further states that Indonesians are
\nstanding up to truth and justice.<\/p>\n
Don't make laugh! The person with the most money and influence
\nwins his case in court. Army and police can be bought to do dirty
\njobs or close their eyes. In virtually all layers of this society
\nis a breathtaking corruption going on.<\/p>\n
These facts are common knowledge and taken for granted by
\neverybody so it seems. However, they should be taken into
\nconsideration by anyone who wants to invest money in this
\ncountry. As a rather harsh conclusion, you come close qualifying
\nfor the status of anarchy.<\/p>\n
Indonesians are tolerant according to D. chandramouli. I would
\nstate that they are an indifferent nation. Where was the
\ncollective reaction of disgust, anger and disapproval from the
\nIndonesians that could have been expected when almost 200
\nforeigners were killed by Indonesian terrorists in Bali? Nowhere
\nto be seen or heard.<\/p>\n
Vice President Hamzah Haz keeps on protecting persons with
\ndangerous extremist Muslim views, and openly denies these
\norganizations exist even when proven they are present in
\nIndonesia. No collective disapproval after these statements was
\nshown.<\/p>\n
Who wants to risk his money in a country that is governed by a
\nman with such erratic views?<\/p>\n
At this moment thousands of expatriate children are at home,
\nbecause international schools have been closed due to due to
\nrisks of a possible terrorist attack. Imagine yourself for a
\nmoment in the situation of all the thousands of expatriate
\nparents. Try to grab their feeling of fear and worry for their
\nchildren, who are at risk in a country where there is no
\nfunctioning law and order.<\/p>\n
Try to look at the situation from their point of view, and be
\naware that very many are at this moment considering leaving
\nIndonesia, because they can't cope with the uncertainties and
\nfear of losing their children.<\/p>\n
Do you think this situation creates an attractive investment
\nclimate and a positive mindset among foreigners about Indonesia?
\nYou should know better than that.<\/p>\n
The Post must keep on confronting the Indonesian and
\nexpatriate people with the bitter reality like they did in the
\narticle Indonesia mentally ill. It won't create cynicism as
\nstates D. Chandramouli, but eventually will generate the
\nawareness among the Indonesians that things really need to change
\nin this country at a much higher speed than up till now.<\/p>\n
