Things haven't changed much<\/p>\n
Since former president Abdurrahman \"Gus Dur\" Wahid was
\ndismissed on the grounds that he might be involved in
\ntwo corruption cases, President Megawati Soekarnoputri has seen
\nunder her leadership:<\/p>\n
1. The Supreme Court's exoneration of Tommy followed by his
\nsurrender.<\/p>\n
2. A downturn in the Indonesian economy as a whole, including the
\nexchange rate of the rupiah.<\/p>\n
3. No improvement in the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency's
\n(IBRA's) recollection of funds.<\/p>\n
4. The necessary amendments to the Constitution and new bills to
\nfight malpractice related to corruption, collusion and nepotism
\n(KKN) have been put on hold; and the few bills passed have all
\nbeen controversial and not in the public interest.<\/p>\n
5. The fight against KKN launched by certain people under Gus Dur
\nhas been discontinued;<\/p>\n
6. The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) and related
\nNGOs are now nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n
7. Many civilian conflicts have continued unabated in many
\nprovinces involving proindependence, ethnical and religious
\nmovements -- none of them being properly handled by the
\ngovernment, the Indonesian Military or the police;<\/p>\n
8. President Megawati is considering pardoning Soeharto.<\/p>\n
9. Many legislators under Megawati are doing what they want to
\nprotect their own interests.<\/p>\n
10. Civil society through valid NGOs have no say at all under
\nMegawati, even less than under her predecessor.<\/p>\n
11. The case of Akbar Tandjung -- who would have been prosecuted
\nunder Gus Dur -- has been kept under the carpet for too long, he
\nhas now had plenty of time to cover up his tracks.<\/p>\n
