The Jakarta Post asked some residents how they<br>\nfelt about the physical presence of troops under a territorial<br>\ncommand.<\/p>\n<p>Vinny Flaviana, 23, works for a private bank on Jl. Sudirman,<br>\nCentral Jakarta. She lives with her family in Jatinegara, East<br>\nJakarta:<\/p>\n<p>The military should guard the country and not meddle in<br>\npolitics. At least, most of them should. If some military people<br>\nhave gained expertise in other fields, such as the economy, and<br>\nthey want to get into politics, I think it's OK.<\/p>\n<p>The military should be a power for defense. They should<br>\nstrengthen their power -- not to attack, but to protect the<br>\ncountry.<\/p>\n<p>District military commands (Kodim) and subdistrict military<br>\ncommands (Koramil) are still necessary because Indonesia is very<br>\nbig. However, they should remember that they are there to secure<br>\nthe area, not to rule it.<\/p>\n<p>Regional commands should be the legs and hands of the central<br>\ncommand and follow its orders.<\/p>\n<p>Teddy, 53, sells mung bean and peanut porridge in Glodok<br>\nmarket, Central Jakarta.
