Thesis no longer mandatory at UI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The rector of the University of Indonesia, M.K.
\nTadjuddin, says he is in favor of reducing study time by
\nscrapping the obligation for undergraduate students to write a
\nthesis.<\/p>\n
The obligation to prepare a thesis has cost students more time
\nthan necessary in completing their studies, he told reporters
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesian students spend five to six years or more to finish
\ntheir studies, while students overseas generally take only three
\nto four years,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"No wonder people who have studied abroad have already become
\ncompany managers, while their Indonesian equivalents have only
\nstarted work and maybe become their clerks,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Tadjuddin made the remarks after signing a memorandum of
\nunderstanding with French Ambassador Thierry de Beauce on a new
\nmagisterial management program to start this year.<\/p>\n
The University of Indonesia has dropped the obligation for its
\nundergraduate students, after reaching the required level of
\ncredits, to write a thesis before they can take their final
\nexams.<\/p>\n
\"It is fine if they write a thesis, but it will no longer
\neffect their grade,\" he said. Undergraduates who do not write a
\nthesis can also take master programs if they are able to fulfill
\nthe requirements, he added.<\/p>\n
He argued that it is unrealistic for students to be graduated
\nas scientists merely on the basis of their having written a
\nthesis. \"That's impossible. If they want to be scientists, they
\ncan take a master program.\"<\/p>\n
The rector disagrees with the argument that the policy of
\nscrapping the thesis requirement will create lower levels of
\nexpertise.<\/p>\n
Experience in other countries has shown that students who did
\nnot write a thesis are doing fine concerning employment and they
\nfinish their studies earlier, he said. (ste)<\/p>",
