        "content": "<p>On 17 August 2026, the Republic of Indonesia will reach the age of 81\nyears. Over more than eight decades, the nation has passed through\nvarious waves of the times: from the revolutionary war of independence\ndefending sovereignty, the dynamics of regime change, to geopolitical\ncontestation and technological disruption in the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>For Muslims as the majority entity, the celebration of independence\nis not merely a ceremonial routine. Independence is a civilisational\nmandate as well as a divine blessing that demands ethical and historical\naccountability: to what extent has the ummah freed its nation from the\nshackles of ignorance, inequality, and fear?<\/p>\n<p>Theologically, independence (al-hurriyah) is rooted in the prophetic\nmission of liberating human dignity. The Qur\u2019an affirms this\ncivilisational orientation in Surah Ibrahim [14] verse 1: \u201cAlif L\u0101m R\u0101.\n(This is) the Book (the Qur\u2019an) which We have sent down to you (Prophet\nMuhammad) so that you may bring mankind out of various darknesses into\nlight (radiant) by the permission of their Lord\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>True independence is an emancipatory movement that continuously moves\nhumans from spaces of darkness (adz-dzulumaat)\u2014structural ignorance,\neconomic tyranny, poverty, and moral degradation\u2014towards light\n(an-nuur), namely social justice, the nobility of reason, and the\nsupremacy of law.<\/p>\n<p>Approaching one century of the republic, the proclamation of\nindependence must be reinterpreted not merely as the nation\u2019s liberation\nfrom foreign colonialism, but as an unceasing endeavour to free citizens\nfrom the shackles of scientific-technological backwardness, ignorance,\nand mass poverty.<\/p>\n<p>The Qur\u2019an lays a very precise sociological foundation regarding the\nsuccess of a nation. In Surah Quraisy [106] verses 3\u20134, Allah SWT says:\n\u201cSo let them worship the Lord (Owner) of this House (the Ka\u2019bah), who\nhas fed them against hunger and secured them from fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This verse brings together three inseparable pillars of civilisation:\na nation that is monotheistic and civilised is marked by two measurable\nindicators: food security and a sense of safety.<\/p>",
