Theater Ketjil returns with play on forest fires<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Thick haze from brush and forest fires has
\ninspired Theater Ketjil, a theater group founded by the late
\nArifin C. Noer, to create a play which marks the group's
\ncomeback, after a long absence from theater performances.<\/p>\n
The play, Kok Bisa-bisanya Sih Kau Bakar Hutan Itu? (How Could
\nYou Burn The Forests?), will feature leading theater actors
\nIkranagara, Dorman Borisman, Arifin's widow Jajang C. Noer and
\nYuyun Wahyudi.<\/p>\n
"I hope the play will become the theater's resurrection,
\nfollowing Mas Fin (Arifin) death about 1,000 days ago," Jajang
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Arifin, a noted theater and film director, died in May 1995
\ndue to a malfunctioning liver.<\/p>\n
The play, written by Ikranagara and directed by Amoroso
\nKatamsi, will be performed on Nov. 5. The play is one of many
\nperformances scheduled to commemorate Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM)
\nArts Center's 29th anniversary on Nov. 10.<\/p>\n
The performances, which include musical performances, dances,
\npoetry reading, a short drama, a puppet play and a two-day
\nseminar on literature, will be held from Nov. 1 through Nov. 12.<\/p>\n
Theater Ketjil is not the only theater group to perform in the
\ncelebration. Theater Koma will perform Kala, a play about a
\ngreedy creature who only has one wish: To eat everything,
\nincluding a human.<\/p>\n
Unlike its previous performances, which run for days, Theater
\nKoma's Kala, written by N. Riantiarno, will only be staged for
\none night, Nov. 3.<\/p>\n
"This is the first time this has happened in Theater Koma's
\nhistory," said Riantiarno, who is better known as Nano.<\/p>\n
The play will feature among its players Nano and his wife
\nRatna Riantiarno and actor Salim Bungsu. The play is directed by
\nIdries Pulungan.<\/p>\n
Putu Wijaya's Theater Mandiri will also participate in the
\ncelebration by performing Dar Der Dor, a play which was staged at
\nthe Gedung Kesenian Jakarta in early October.<\/p>\n
Dar Der Dor, written in 1991 by Putu in Kuala Lumpur,
\nMalaysia, centers on people's socioeconomic problems. The players
\ninclude Wendy Nasution and Ucok Hutagaol. Music arrangement is by
\nHarry Roesly.<\/p>\n
TIM's anniversary is also being used by Rendra to perform a
\nshort play, Kereta Kencana, with his former wife, Ken Zuraida. It
\nis an adaptation of Eugene Ionesco's The Chairs.<\/p>\n
Kereta Kencana will be performed on Nov. 2, and will feature
\nRendra, Ken and Sudibyanto.<\/p>\n
Wayang<\/p>\n
In addition to performing a short play, Rendra will also give
\na cultural speech on Nov. 10, TIM's anniversary.<\/p>\n
A shadow puppet play, Hanoman Obong (Hanoman's Burning), will
\nbe performed by Ki Hadi Sujiwo Tejo on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n
Unlike a traditional puppet play, Tejo will use the Hanoman
\nSEA Games white monkey mascot doll instead of the usual white
\nmonkey shadow puppet used in the epic Ramayana play.<\/p>\n
In the play, Hanoman, who is caught and burned after his
\nattack on the Alengka Kingdom to rescue Sinta, kidnapped by King
\nRahwana, burns down the palace and the forests surrounding it.
\nThick haze from the forest fires makes some of Alengka's
\nresidents complain.<\/p>\n
Plays and puppetry are not the only activities planned for the
\ncelebration of TIM's anniversary. The organizer will also hold a
\ntwo-day seminar on literature.<\/p>\n
The seminar, to discuss the roles of two prominent figures in
\nIndonesian literature -- Asrul Sani and H.B. Jassin -- will be
\nheld on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9.<\/p>\n
Speakers include Afrizal Malna, Putu Wijaya, M. Sobari and
\nSapardi Djoko Damono. During the seminar, there will also be an
\nexhibition of literature books and H.B. Jassin's works. (ste)<\/p>",
