The article examines the rise of zero-click searches, where users obtain answers directly on Google's results page without visiting external websites. Data from SparkToro and Datos indicates that nearly 60% of searches in the US and EU already end without a click, a trend accelerated by Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. The shift from a web directory to an answer engine has significant implications for digital publishers, bloggers, and online retailers who depend on search traffic.

For more than two decades, the internet was built on a simple habit:
search, Google displays links, then click. That model shaped a vast
digital ecosystem. Media outlets gained readers, bloggers gained
visitors, online shops gained potential customers, and Google gained its
position as the gateway to the web. However, that habit is slowly
changing. Now, users increasingly receive direct answers on the search
page. There is no need to open an article. There is no need to visit
five sites. In many cases, users do not need to click anything at all.
This is the era of zero-click search, and the presence of AI Overviews
and AI Mode is making that change move far more quickly.

Zero-click search is a condition in which a person performs a search
on a search engine but does not click on any external result after
obtaining or processing the information needed. The concept is not
entirely new. Google has long provided featured snippets, weather
information, maps, calculators, flight schedules, general knowledge, and
various knowledge panels. All of these features allow users to obtain
information without visiting other sites. However, generative AI is
taking zero-click search to a different level. If previously Google
displayed a single short answer, now AI can compile, summarise, compare,
and explain information from various sources in a far more comprehensive
answer. In other words, the search engine is beginning to change from a
web directory into an answer engine.

Data from SparkToro and Datos shows that this phenomenon is not
merely a prediction of the future. In a 2024 analysis of millions of
search activities, around 58.5% of Google searches in the United States
and 59.7% in the European Union ended without a click to web results.
The study defined zero-click as a search that ends without the user
clicking on any available result. That figure is important because it
shows that even before the dominance of generative AI, user behaviour
was already moving towards click-free searching. AI is only accelerating
the trend.
",
