JAKARTA \u2014 The sensation of diving into the underwater world without\ngetting wet can be experienced by visitors to SeaWorld Ancol, a massive\naquarium in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The giant aquarium, which covers approximately 24 by 38 metres with a\ncapacity of five million litres of water, offers stunning underwater\nviews.<\/p>\n
Bluish light penetrating the thick aquarium glass reflects the\nvibrant colours of 175 species, or approximately 8,000 fish swimming\nfreely as though in the open sea.<\/p>\n
Thousands of fish seem eager to display their beauty to SeaWorld\nvisitors. Many visitors pause and gaze at the aquarium for extended\nperiods to enjoy the marine life so close before their eyes.<\/p>\n
Some visitors also capture these moments on their mobile phones and\nshare them on social media.<\/p>\n
However, behind the beauty of the giant aquarium, a dozen divers,\nknown as curators, must work hard every day.<\/p>\n
SeaWorld\u2019s Curatorial Manager Heri Mulyono, 49, stated that currently\n13 divers work actively every day in rotation.<\/p>\n
The divers\u2019 duties extend far beyond performing or entertaining with\nfish in the giant aquarium. Their work is considerably more\ndemanding.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have 13 divers whose tasks include caring for marine life,\nfeeding them, and maintaining the cleanliness of the display\nfacilities,\u201d said Heri when contacted by Kompas.com on Tuesday, 10 March\n2026.<\/p>\n
Heri noted that to become a diver at SeaWorld, a person must be\nphysically and mentally healthy, not squeamish, not easily frightened,\nand willing to learn continuously every day.<\/p>\n
However, the primary requirement is that curators must possess a\ndiving certificate, so not just anyone can qualify.<\/p>\n
Additionally, divers must undergo training lasting between six months\nto one year, covering aquarium system operation, feeding procedures, and\ncare for sick marine life.<\/p>\n
After completing the training successfully, the diver is then cleared\nto work daily managing the giant aquarium at SeaWorld.<\/p>\n
One diver named Chandra, 35, has worked at SeaWorld for nearly seven\nyears.<\/p>\n
He recounted that being a diver in a giant aquarium is not\nstraightforward, especially in the early stages of employment.<\/p>\n
He noted that diving in SeaWorld\u2019s aquarium is actually more\nnerve-wracking than diving in the open ocean. When diving at sea, people\noften struggle to encounter fish and must swim to the seabed.<\/p>\n
