        "content": "<p>The threat to our economy<\/p>\n<p>Bank Indonesia Governor Syahril Sabirin visited Washington<br>\nD.C. recently to lobby the World Bank and the International<br>\nMonetary Fund for speedy disbursement of financial aid to<br>\nIndonesia. It seems, however, that his effort was ineffective.<br>\nBoth those international financial institutions remained<br>\nsteadfast in their insistence on a full and transparent<br>\ndisclosure soon of the Bank Bali scandal. They also insisted that<br>\nthe unabridged audit report of PricewaterhouseCoopers regarding<br>\nthe case must be made public forthwith.<\/p>\n<p>Managing Indonesia's economy is not an easy job, with mostly<br>\ninternal factors hampering effective measures. Lack of political<br>\nwill on the part of our authorities to set aside their narrow<br>\ninterests aside for the nation's sake is a major reason of the<br>\ndecline of the Habibie administration's credibility at present.<\/p>\n<p>It does not end there. The Attorney General's Office's<br>\ndiscontinuation of its probe into suspected acts of malfeasance<br>\nin a number of foundations connected to former president Soeharto<br>\nposes a huge challenge to President B.J. Habibie as a<br>\npresidential candidate.<\/p>\n<p>All these issues have a great influence on Indonesia's social,<br>\npolitical and economic conditions. For this reason concrete steps<br>\nare needed to revive our economy and restructure our banking<br>\nsystem.
