The sultan and I held talks: Wiranto

\nFollowing in the footsteps of fellow Golkar Party presidential
\nhopeful Surya Paloh, former Indonesian Military chief Gen. (ret).
\nWiranto paid a visit to Yogyakarta Sultan Hamengkubuwono X on
\nFriday.<\/p>\n
Speaking after the meeting, Wiranto said he shared his
\nconcerns about several national issues and Golkar internal
\naffairs with Hamengkubuwono, who is also Yogyakarta governor,
\nduring the brief meeting.<\/p>\n
\"I've told you that although the sultan has withdrawn from the
\nparty convention, he has not distanced himself from Golkar. He
\nencouraged me to go ahead and participate in the convention,\"
\nWiranto said.<\/p>\n
During the convention, Wiranto and five other Golkar figures,
\nincluding chairman Akbar Tandjung, will vie for the party's
\nendorsement to contest the direct presidential election on July
\n5.<\/p>\n
Hamengkubuwono withdrew from the selection after Akbar was
\nacquitted of graft charges last month.<\/p>\n
Wiranto denied that his visit was a move to woo support from
\nHamengkubuwono and Golkar constituents in the province. Wiranto
\nis a Yogyakarta native.<\/p>\n
\"I had hoped to meet the sultan for a long time, but could
\nonly find the time now,\" Wiranto said.<\/p>\n
Wiranto recently won support from Muslim clerics in West Java.
\nHe also met former president Abdurrahman Wahid twice last month.
