The Indonesian architecture sector calls for more collaborative space to generate adaptable designs addressing climate change, urbanisation, and Nusantara’s cultural diversity. The LIXIL Architectural Design Competition 2026 (LADC 2026) is positioned as a dialogue platform for architects and students to explore future-relevant designs, with international juries and a studio exchange opportunity in Japan.

The Indonesian architecture industry is seen as needing more spaces
for collaboration that can generate adaptive design ideas in response to
the challenges of climate change, urbanisation, and the cultural
diversity of Nusantara. Architecture competitions are no longer merely
about showcasing work, but are increasingly directed as spaces for
dialogue to deliver more sustainable living environments. In this
context, the company providing water solutions and sustainable housing
has again organised the LIXIL Architectural Design Competition 2026, or
LADC 2026. The event is expected to serve as a platform for architects
and architecture students to explore designs relevant to future
challenges. Marketing Director of LIXIL Water Technology Indonesia,
Arfindi Batubara, said Indonesia has thousands of identities with
varying challenges across regions, from urbanisation pressures to
climate change. Therefore, according to him, architecture must not only
deliver aesthetically pleasing designs but also be capable of offering
solutions. “LADC does not seek designs that are merely beautiful, but
ideas that can become conversations and solutions,” Arfindi said in a
statement on Wednesday, 21 May 2026. This year, LADC takes up the theme
“ARCHIPELAGO DIALOGUES: Architecture as a Space of Co-Creation.” The
theme highlights Indonesia as an archipelagic nation with cultural and
natural diversity, and development challenges that differ yet remain
interconnected. The competition features an international panel of
judges, including Andra Matin, Gregorius Supie, and Richard Wood. In
addition, the winners will have the opportunity for a studio exchange
and to undertake an architectural journey to Japan. According to
Arfindi, LADC is not only focused on the final results but also serves
as a platform to broaden dialogue and exploration of ideas within
Indonesia’s architectural scene. He hopes the competition will spur more
inclusive and sustainable design approaches. Registration and submission
open from 18 May to 5 July 2026, with two main categories: professional
and student categories. The culmination of the competition and the
announcement of the winners will be held as part of the LIXIL Day of
Architecture & Design 2026 on 12 August 2026.
",
