The rights and responsibility<\/p>\n
Campaign time is over and the general election has passed. The
\npolitical configuration of Indonesia is clear. Members of the
\nHouse of Representatives (DPR) have been appointed and have
\nundergone a crash course program to familiarize them with the
\ntask ahead.<\/p>\n
According to my logic, we should have now a time of peace and
\ntranquility in preparation for the next important session of the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR) to elect the President and
\nVice President and to formulate the mandate for the next
\nleadership in the form of Broad Outlines of State Policy (GBHN).
\nBut contrary to my expectations, we still have troubles.<\/p>\n
Mass destruction of property by uncontrolled mobs has happened
\nin several towns, causing loss of human life and property damage.
\nWhether the violent action is spontaneous or there is someone or
\nsome organization behind it, I do not know.<\/p>\n
Student brawls that claim lives still occur. Angry people
\nattacked and damaged police posts. Again, I honestly have no
\nknowledge of what is behind all these incidents.<\/p>\n
Increase in crime in the form of murders, bank robberies,
\nrape, corruption and collusion is continuously making news. Added
\nto that is the rupiah depreciation which may disrupt the smooth
\nflow of the economy. Is there someone or some organization behind
\nall these just to discredit the government? How do I know?<\/p>\n
Forest fires in Kalimantan and on several mountains in Java
\nare another national catastrophe. Fires in towns that raze houses
\nin slum areas happen almost every day. What is behind all these
\nphenomena? Does anybody know? I don't.<\/p>\n
On the political scene, there is the fanning of controversial
\nissues in order to invite reactions and create an atmosphere for
\npolemics. Is this necessary?<\/p>\n
We live in a democratic society so freedom of expression
\nshould be developed, but this freedom should be a tool for the
\ncreation of creativity, which is needed in the national
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
Indonesian citizens have the right to express their opinion,
\nand the right to have a different opinion. However, these rights
\nshould be combined with a sense of responsibility.<\/p>\n
It is very unfortunate psychologically that people who
\ncriticize the government are usually considered to be heroes, and
\npeople who support the government are branded yes-men.
\nMy appeal is that one should restrain oneself and think before
\nsaying something, especially if he or she occupies a high social
\nstatus or government position.<\/p>\n
Let us maintain peace and order, and when aspiring to fight a
\nlegitimate political battle, we should observe the why, when,
\nwhere and how to do it.<\/p>\n
