The richest gubernatorial candidate<\/p>\n
At least 80 people in West Java have registered as
\ngubernatorial candidates. The selection process will winnow this
\ndown to six pairs of governors and vice governors, and those
\nfound eligible will proceed to the final test.<\/p>\n
Last Wednesday the election committee announced the wealth of
\nthe candidates and the drama began. One candidate, a retired Army
\ncaptain, admitted to being worth about Rp 17 trillion, including
\nbuildings valued at Rp 100 billion.<\/p>\n
Another contestant, a retired brigadier general and former
\nchief of the West Java Military Command, put his wealth at Rp 70
\nbillion, making him the second richest candidate.<\/p>\n
The third richest was the wife of the late Bandung mayor, who
\nput her wealth at Rp 46 billion.<\/p>\n
There were some strong reactions to these wealth reports.<\/p>\n
The retired Army captain said he made his money from a
\nbusiness in Kuala Lumpur. But as he is only 54 -- it is not clear
\nwhen exactly he retired from the Army -- he made all this money
\nin just 24 years.<\/p>\n
The retired captain could be included in the Indonesian
\nRecords Museum as the richest gubernatorial candidate the country
\nhas ever had.<\/p>\n

Is the United Nations (UN) still relevant? This question was
\nraised after the United States attacked Iraq without the approval
\nof the UN.<\/p>\n
The credibility of the UN deserves to be queried. The
\ninternational body was too weak and toothless to face off against
\nthe U.S., though it is very tough against small and poor
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
It is obvious to many that the UN always sides with the U.S.
\nand its interests. Unfortunately, the world will soon forget this
\nafter the (Iraq) war is over.<\/p>\n
People may forget that the U.S. has committed a crime. There
\nis no legal evidence that Iraq possesses weapons of mass
\ndestruction. The U.S. has committed a crime because innocent
\ncivilians have been killed during its attacks on Iraq.<\/p>\n
The Iraq war was started because of a kind of desire for
\nrevenge, with current U.S. President George W. Bush eager to act
\nagainst Iraq for his father Bush Sr., who failed to topple Saddam
\nHussein during the first Gulf War in 1991.<\/p>\n
Does the U.S. have the right to invade another country and
\noverthrow its government?<\/p>\n
The UN was established because of an awareness of the
\nimportance of maintaining world peace and resolving disputes
\nbetween countries without violence.<\/p>\n
One thing that is certain to result from the Iraq war is that
\nthe world will no longer trust the UN, which claims to have the
\npower to maintain world peace.<\/p>\n
History records that Indonesian president Sukarno had his
\nproblems with the UN. In a meeting in Jakarta on Jan. 7, 1965,
\nSukarno decided that Indonesia would withdraw from the UN and
\ndevelop an axis known as The New Emerging Forces. Sukarno was
\nborn too early as there is no single power that can control the
\nU.S. now.<\/p>\n
