The quest for high-technology<\/p>\n
President Soeharto has reminded us that an advanced and
\nprosperous nation is one which commands science and technology.
\nThe President advises Indonesian children to master science and
\ntechnology so that they will be able to make the nation
\nprosperous.<\/p>\n
The question of promoting science and technology cannot be
\nseparated from the degree to which private entrepreneurs are
\nwilling to support such a program. Private businesses have both
\nthe money and an interest in their advancement. The problem is
\nthat the existing realities show that few of them are actively
\ninterested in developing technology.<\/p>\n
Many hurdles are still in the way of our children mastering
\nscience and technology. Cost is the main constraint since
\neducation is becoming more and more an expensive commodity. The
\nassumption is growing among our people that education, that is
\naffordable, is also by necessity low in quality, and visa versa.<\/p>\n
Our children have a long way to go before they can master
\nscience and technology. And also what the condition of the road
\nthey have to travel will depend, to a very large extent, on what
\nwe do at present. If the contradiction in attitude mentioned
\nabove continues to persist, then it may be difficult for us to
\nproduce Indonesians of caliber within the coming century.<\/p>\n
