'The Plaza' preparation countdown<\/p>\n
It takes at least a week to prepare for the one-hour variety show
\nprogram The Plaza, which is aired live by private television
\nstation Metro TV from La Moda Cafe at Plaza Indonesia, Central
\nJakarta, every Saturday evening.
\nTuesday<\/p>\n
The producer and director of the program, as well as creative
\npersonnel, meet officials of Citibank and the director of Admaker
\nCommunication, the bank's media communication agency, at the bank
\noffice.<\/p>\n
They discuss preparations for the program, such as the
\navailable singers, dancers and models, which is consistent with
\nthe current theme for the Saturday show. The theme being
\ndiscussed this time is "Romantic with Ruth Sahanaya".<\/p>\n
Every Tuesday, they also discuss four themes for the shows
\nnext month.
\nThursday<\/p>\n
The names of the singers and an outline of the program are
\nfaxed to the show's hosts, Ivy Batuta and Erwin Parengkuan. The
\noutline, which consists of what should be talked about in general
\nby the hosts, is determined by the creative personnel. But
\nmostly, the hosts lead the show based on their own creativity and
\nimprovisation.
\nFriday (at 10 p.m.)<\/p>\n
About 25 crew members arrive at Plaza Indonesia after the
\nshopping center is closed to customers. They install the stage,
\nlighting, audio equipment and a control room.<\/p>\n
The stage is set up in the cafe on the first floor while the
\ncontrol room is on the second floor in front of the cafe.<\/p>\n
Preparations, such as checking sound and lighting and
\ninstalling cables from the stage to the control room should be
\nfinished by 7 a.m. on Saturday as the shopping center will open
\nfor customers within the next two hours.
\nSaturday (at 3 p.m.)<\/p>\n
La Moda Cafe is closed for customers. Some Calanita dancers
\nand Elite Looks models rehearse on stage. Two satellite news vans
\narrive and park near the west gate of the shopping center. A van
\nis used to air the program and connect it with the television
\nstation in Kedoya, West Jakarta, while the other is a backup.<\/p>\n
Singers Trie Utami and Utha Likumahua, accompanied by their
\nmanagers, arrive and rehearse. An hour later, the main singer,
\nRuth Sahanaya, accompanied by her manager and husband, Jeffrie
\nWoworuntu, also arrives and prepares.
\n7 p.m.<\/p>\n
Singers, dancers and models have final rehearsals before they
\nchange into their costumes. Producer and director Toni Syah Indra
\nchecks preparations in the control room. The air of expectation
\nis now growing palpably as transmission time inexorably
\napproaches ...
\n8:05 p.m.<\/p>\n
The program starts on time (after a scheduled five-minute news
\nbulletin) with Ruth Sahanaya singing her hit Tak Kuduga (I Didn't
\nExpect It). The program continues with the performance of Trie
\nwho sings Ruth's hit, Kaulah Segalanya (You are Everything) and
\nUtha with Astaga (Oh My God!).<\/p>\n
The final number involves all the cast singing on stage,
\nincluding the presenters.
\n8:59 p.m.<\/p>\n
The lights are turned off and the show is over for another
\nweek.<\/p>\n
