The Netherlands to help city mature<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Netherlands Ministry of Housing, City
\nPlanning and the Environment and the Jakarta administration are
\nto launch a joint program to enhance Jakarta's development, an
\nofficial said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"We have talked to Indonesia's minister of environment and the
\nminister of public works, as well as the municipality, to discuss
\nthe city's development. We also want to see the Jakarta Bay
\nreclamation project,\" PJJ Maessen, a spokesman for the
\nNetherlands ministry, told The Jakarta Post after meeting with
\nGovernor Sutiyoso at City Hall.<\/p>\n
An ad hoc committee will be formed to coordinate the efforts
\nof Dutch and Indonesian experts who are expected to come up with
\nstrategies for developing the capital.<\/p>\n
\"We will have a training session for Jakarta officials who are
\ninvolved in city development projects,\" Maessen said.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands Minister of Housing, City Planning and the
\nEnvironment, Margreeth de Boer, told the Post a handbook on the
\ncity's development plans is to be prepared by the experts.<\/p>\n
\"The book will contain every aspect of development, ranging
\nfrom planning to the environmental impacts to be considered,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"Basically in Jakarta we have three big issues to deal with:
\nthe low-cost housing, the river pollution and the flood danger
\nduring the rainy season.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia and the Netherlands share similar problems, such as
\nthe rise of the sea level and the land-sinking problem. I think
\nwhat we have done in the Netherlands to cope with such problems
\ncan be implemented here.\"<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso told the Post that the cooperation was in line with
\nthe municipality's program to clean up the riverbanks and create
\na better housing environment for the city's 9.5 million people.<\/p>\n
\"The revitalization of Sunda Kelapa Port, the reclamation
\nproject and the renovation of Jakarta's old city are crucial for
\nJakarta,\" he said. \"I think this cooperation will make it
\npossible for Jakarta to have better city planning in the future.\"<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso also briefed his Dutch guests about the
\nmunicipality's programs on regreening, cleaning up rivers and
\ntourist developments in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Among the guests of honor attending the meeting were: the
\nambassador of the Netherlands, P.R. Brouwer; the Netherlands
\nDeputy Director for International Environment Affairs Van Ziijst;
\nthe head of the city's environmental bureau Aboejoewono
