The Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) management has been
\noccupied by some figures whose capabilities are beyond doubt,
\nbringing some fresh air for Muslims.<\/p>\n
The role of MUI becomes highly essential in an atmosphere of
\nghiroh, where people have a developed a good appetite for
\nlearning about their religion.<\/p>\n
Muslims in general have a particularly limited understanding
\nof fiqih (Islamic law), let alone in contemporary matters.<\/p>\n
We hope that, in the future, the MUI would be more proactive
\nby issuing recommendations or rulings regarding things which can
\nbring negative impact to the society.<\/p>\n
Of course, we miss the Council's tendencies.<\/p>\n
These include its prohibitions of pornographic print media,
\npornographic VCDs, television programs showing private parts of
\nthe body, along with drugs and liquor.<\/p>\n
Other things include setting off firecrackers before religious
\nholidays, wearing scanty clothing -- now in vogue among teenage
\ngirls -- making dates, indulging in adulterous sex and the
\ncelebration of Valentine's Day, etc.<\/p>\n
