According to official
information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency
(BMKG), the period from 15 January to 17 February 2026 is expected to
see moderate to heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding and
landslides.

On 16 and 17 February 2026 specifically, a number of provinces across
Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and
Papua have been placed under alert and warning status due to the
potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Although no areas have been
placed under extreme weather warnings, the public has nonetheless been
advised to exercise caution regarding hydrometeorological impacts. In
addition to rain, strong winds are also forecast in several regions
including the Bangka Belitung Islands, Lampung, East Nusa Tenggara,
North Sulawesi and West Sumatra.

“The public is urged to monitor weather information updates before
undertaking activities, particularly when travelling and participating
in Lunar New Year celebrations,” BMKG stated through its official
channels on Monday, 16 January 2026.

The Meaning of Rain During Lunar New Year in Chinese Tradition

Beyond the potential for rainfall during Lunar New Year, this
phenomenon carries symbolic significance in Chinese culture. According
to People’s Daily, water in traditional philosophy is frequently
associated with fortune and abundance. Consequently, rain falling at the
start of the new year is often interpreted as an auspicious sign
heralding hopes of prosperity.

Meanwhile, Lunar New Year coincides with the transition to spring in
the traditional Chinese calendar. In agrarian societies, rain during
this period is vital for enriching the soil after winter. This symbolism
has evolved into hopes for growth — whether in business, career or
family life.

Beyond symbolising fortune, rain is also interpreted as a symbol of
cleansing. Water falling from the sky is believed to carry fresh energy
and wash away negative elements from the previous year. This philosophy
aligns with the tradition of thoroughly cleaning one’s home before Lunar
New Year as a form of preparation for welcoming a new beginning.

From a scientific perspective, rain during Lunar New Year is part of
the dynamics of Indonesia’s wet season. Nevertheless, the symbolic
meaning can still be appreciated as part of cultural tradition.
",
