        "content": "<p>The Lippmann tendency<\/p>\n<p>Arya Gunawan, in his letter titled, Response to Frank<br>\nRichardson(The Jakarta Post, May, 21) has, not unexpectedly, set<br>\nabout defending his credentials as a columnist by trying to show<br>\nhe is familiar with the writings of Walter Lippmann, who he<br>\nquoted in his article, Indonesian Press: Walking a tightrope (The <br>\nPost, May 14). Arya Gunawan has, it seems, scraped around for<br>\nsome pro-democracy sentiments expressed by Walter Lippmann, but,<br>\nby stating that Lippman is \"regarded by some as a potentially<br>\nauthoritarian thinker\", appears rather reluctant to face the<br>\ntruth.<\/p>\n<p>Democracy was to Lippmann what judicial trials were to Joseph<br>\nStalin: a process that could be cynically engineered to serve<br>\nnarrow political ends. I am sure Stalin extolled certain virtues<br>\nof court procedure; but I would not quote him to support an<br>\nargument in favor of achieving justice through the judicial<br>\nprocess!<\/p>\n<p>Hilde May's letter titled, Who controls the media? (The Post<br>\nMay, 22) refers to, what I see, as a Lippmann tendency in<br>\nIndonesia by press moguls to use their power to exert political<br>\ninfluence. This was particularly rampant during the period that<br>\nled to the downfall of former president Abdurrahman Wahid.<\/p>\n<p>What is needed by the press in Indonesia is a high level of<br>\nintegrity that facilitates strict adherence to democratic values<br>\nand principles. Only this will ensure that the needs of the<br>\nnation prevail over the narrow political ends of its various<br>\nprotagonists, who may try to distort the democratic process<br>\nthrough the media, just as Lippmann would have envisioned.<\/p>\n<p>FRANK RICHARDSON<\/p>\n<p>Tangerang, Banten<\/p>",
