The hypocrisy among us<\/p>\n
The statement which the speaker of the House of
\nRepresentatives, Wahono, made at the closing of the current
\nsession period deserves our attention. Wahono said among other
\nthings that at present, signs are clearly visible of a culture of
\nhypocrisy which is affecting some of us, including some of our
\nleaders. What Wahono meant was the incongruity which tends to
\nexist between our words and deeds.<\/p>\n
The former provincial governor of Central Java also said that
\nduring the recent session period, the House clearly observed this
\ndisconcerting social phenomenon and the tendency of our state
\nadministrators to merely react to developments, which
\ndemonstrates their lack of mental readiness to confront
\nuncontrollable social and political conditions that might arise.<\/p>\n
Such a condition is actually the result of two different
\ncrises that are at present taking place. One is the lack of
\nappropriate role models, while the other concerns the people's
\ntrust. It is not easy at present for people to find role models.
\nMeanwhile, the people who are in a position to guard the people's
\ntrust are failing to do so.<\/p>\n
Our political stage is not one that ignores moral values, or
\none where the end justifies the means. Because of our Pancasila
\nphilosophy, our political arena should reflect good ethics and
\npolitical morals. Therefore, any incongruity between words and
\ndeeds cannot be condoned. The same goes for arbitrary and violent
\nbehavior.<\/p>\n
Regarding this culture of hypocrisy -- assuming that it does
\nindeed exist -- the big questions are: How did it come about? How
\ndo we get over it?<\/p>\n
We profess to be a religious people. Religious tolerance in
\nour daily lives is praised by others. P4 Pancasila instruction
\ncourses are continuously being held. Yet deceit and hypocrisy
\ncontinue to exist. Why?<\/p>\n
This is a serious question. However, we must not lose our
\noptimism for a better tomorrow.<\/p>\n
