The environment's impact on our future<\/p>\n
The signals are becoming increasingly clear that Jakarta and
\nits surrounding areas are no longer capable of supporting the
\ngrowing populace. An imbalance has developed between the area's
\npopulation size and the available infrastructure and the
\nunfortunate fact is that no comprehensive solution has ever been
\nfound that can fundamentally alter the situation.<\/p>\n
Unhealthy and disagreeable environmental conditions, pollution
\nand the decline of tolerance among people are factors that will
\naffect the quality of our generation of people who have a role to
\nplay in the future. It is difficult under such conditions to
\nexpect our youngsters to grow up and become people of quality,
\ncapable of facing the competitive atmosphere of the coming
\nmillennium.<\/p>\n
Lately, we have also witnessed a gradual decline in our
\ntraditional community values. The old community spirit is fading.
\nEvery individual is busy chasing his or her own targets with no
\nconsideration for other people's interests. Murders are part of
\nour daily newspaper fare. Another example that may seem
\ninsignificant is the unwillingness of motorists on the road to
\ngive way to others. But if even in such trivial matters our sense
\nof consideration for others is lacking, how could we possibly be
\nexpected to share in another person's grief or misfortune.<\/p>\n
The imbalance between our environment and the size of our
\npopulation has far-reaching consequences. This is all the more
\ntrue as we await the dawning of the 21st century, when national
\nboundaries are bound to become obscure and the flow information,
\ntrade and travel occur with extraordinary speed.<\/p>\n
To effectively anticipate those conditions, quality human
\nresources are needed. Clear-cut standards have so far never been
\nformulated. However, judging by the progress that has been made
\nby the newly-industrialized countries, a good working ethos,
\nperseverance, thriftiness, respect for higher education and a
\nfrugal lifestyle are the qualities that are needed.<\/p>\n
