Even after\nSubandrio had spent years behind bars, he maintained the dapper\nappearance he had cultivated when he was First Deputy Prime Minister in\nSukarno\u2019s government.<\/p>\n<p>As a child, Arnold, now 52, visited Subandrio with his mother, Anne\nFrida Yohana Hanafiah-Sereh, nearly once a month. They came with\nArnold\u2019s older brother, John \u201cJonjon\u201d Alexander Gurowo; their\nstepfather; and their infant half-sister. They also visited during end\nof fasting month celebration Idul Fitri and every September 15,\nSubandrio\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Arnold still remembers how enthusiastically his grandfather welcomed\nthem. \u201cPapa Ban (Subandrio) would usually meet us at the prison gate and\nask the guards to take me and my siblings around the prison grounds,\u201d\nArnold wrote in a letter to Tempo on Friday, September 25, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Subandrio served time at Nirbaya Military Detention Center and\nCipinang Prison in East Jakarta. At both facilities, his cell was always\nnext to that of Omar Dhani, the Air Force Commander from 1962 to 1965,\nwhom Arnold called \u201cEyang (Grandpa) Omar.\u201d<\/p>",
