The brains behind baffling questions<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Ani Sumadi's sobriquet is the question editor of
\nquiz shows. However executive producers Helmy Yahya and Reinhard.
\nR. Tawas are on a higher plane; they are dubbed the question
\nthinkers.<\/p>\n
Having worked with Ani Sumadi for eight years and currently
\nthe host of ANteve's NBA basketball show, Helmy explained what
\ngoes into \"forming the questions.\"<\/p>\n
\"One Ani Sumadi quiz show alone, like Aksara Bermakna,
\nrequires 9,000 questions at the minimum,\" Helmy said.<\/p>\n
And what has he gained from going through years of
\ndifferences, not to mention millions of mind-boggling questions?<\/p>\n
\"We keep learning things.<\/p>\n
\"It's amazing the amount we can learn in a very short period
\nin life... from forming 10 different questions for a single
\nanswer to managing an entire quiz show.\"<\/p>\n
Helmy added that he traveled a lot and one of the first things
\nhe did after ending up in a new city was to ask for directions to
\ngood bookstores.<\/p>\n
\"The kind of books I buy for quiz shows include reference
\nbooks, books of facts, unique things, categorized information and
\noddities,\" Helmy said.<\/p>\n
\"It takes days to prepare questions and the three of us form
\nthem in our minds almost routinely like living our day-to-day
\nlives. Sometimes while driving, I make small notes in the car and
\nonce at the office, I pen questions down.\"<\/p>\n
Information is regularly taken from the \"rarest and most
\nunthought of books, such as the Guinness Book of Misinformation.<\/p>\n
\"For example, the black box (in airplanes) is not necessarily
\nblack, it could be orange,\" Helmy said.<\/p>\n
He mentioned that for music quizzes (Berpacu Dalam Melodi,
\nGita Remaja and Persembahanku), questions were compiled by him
\nand Ani alone.<\/p>\n
Reinhard added that reading the International Herald Tribune,
\nTime, Singapore's Straits Times, Newsweek, The Jakarta Post,
\nbooks and encyclopedias was routine.<\/p>\n
\"We manage to overcome differences by reading a lot...
\nfeeding ourselves with information to better our question-
\nselection skills and ensure correct information,\" Reinhard
