JAKARTA (JP): Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher
\nwill start a three-day visit in Indonesia today as a speaker at
\nthe Citibank Asian Leadership Series meeting.<\/p>\n
A statement released from Citibank over the weekend stated
\nthat the series, launched in 1992, consists of discussions on the
\nemerging role of the Asia-Pacific region and on leadership in the
\nnew world order.<\/p>\n
Thatcher's visit marks Citibank's 27th anniversary in
\nIndonesia. She will speak on regional economic and political
\nissues and share Indonesia's economic achievements. She will also
\naddress the opportunities and obstacles facing the Asia-Pacific
\nregion.<\/p>\n
Thatcher was appointed prime minister, First Lord of the
\nTreasury and Minister for Civil Service in 1979, following the
\nsuccess of the Conservative Party in Britain's general elections.<\/p>\n
When the Conservative Party subsequently won the general
\nelections in 1983 and 1987, Thatcher became the first British
\nprime minister in the century to contest three consecutive
