Julio and his grandmother, Welas (74), have long lived in a simple\nhouse in Kampung Kedung Tungkul, Surakarta, Central Java. To meet her\ngrandson\u2019s living needs, Welas sells vegetables door-to-door. However,\none thing that has never faded is her hope that her grandson will have a\nbetter future.<\/p>\n
For the Ministry of Social Affairs, Julio\u2019s story is not just a\nnumber in poverty data or a portrait of a school dropout child. He is\nthe real face of children who need the state\u2019s helping hand to\nrediscover their life\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n
Since losing his father at the age of one, Julio grew up in\nlimitations with his grandmother. Without adequate guidance, he once\nfell into the wrong social circle. His days were coloured by teenage\nmischief, from throwing stones to carrying sharp weapons. He even\ndropped out of school in the third grade of primary school.<\/p>\n
This condition became a particular worry for Welas. In her\nlimitations, she kept searching for a way so that her grandson would not\nstray further. That hope finally found its path through the Sekolah\nRakyat.<\/p>\n
Sekolah Rakyat is a free residential education programme presented by\nPresident of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto for children\nfrom poor and vulnerable families. Now, Julio is registered as a student\nat Sekolah Rakyat Dasar (SRD) 2 Surakarta.<\/p>\n
Julio\u2019s behavioural changes are gradually apparent. The once\ndifficult-to-manage Julio now shows a calmer attitude. He has returned\nto learning, become acquainted with discipline, and, most heartwarming,\nrediscovered affection in his relationship with his grandmother.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow he is closer. He can hug and kiss me. He says he is happy at\nschool,\u201d said Welas in a written statement on Monday (13\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
For the Ministry of Social Affairs, Sekolah Rakyat serves as a safe\nspace that restores a place for children not only to learn to read and\ncount. But Sekolah Rakyat students also learn about values, discipline,\nand the future.<\/p>\n
The presence of the residential school also lightens the family\u2019s\nburden. If previously Julio often asked for daily pocket money that was\nburdensome, now his basic needs are met. The state is present not only\nas a service provider but as a protector for vulnerable children.<\/p>\n
Amid her increasingly frail age, Welas can now breathe a little\neasier. Her hope is simple: Julio grows into a good, independent person\nand does not end up destitute.<\/p>\n
She shares that in every prayer, she entrusts Julio\u2019s future, a hope\nthat she knows one day must be released.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I am no longer here, I entrust my grandson. May he become a good\nperson,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Julio\u2019s story serves as a reminder that the right intervention can\nchange a child\u2019s life direction.
