        "content": "<p>Thames Water obtains credits<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Thames Water International of Britain announced<br>\nin a statement yesterday that it had received credit facilities<br>\nof US$200 million to upgrade and expand the water supply system<br>\nin the eastern half of the capital.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was made after the signing of an agreement with<br>\na syndicate of international banks led by ING Bank NV in London<br>\non July 24.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month Thames also obtained loans amounting to $50<br>\nmillion from the European Investment Bank for the same purposes,<br>\nthe statement made available to The Jakarta Post said.<\/p>\n<p>Thames Water is responsible for managing, operating,<br>\nmaintaining, expanding and improving the water supply system for<br>\nthe eastern part of Jakarta in cooperation with Jakarta<br>\nadministration-owned water company PDAM Jaya.<\/p>\n<p>John Hurcom, the firm&apos;s president, said, &quot;The credit<br>\narrangements are fully in accord with our contractual commitment<br>\nunder the cooperation agreement with PDAM Jaya to have financing<br>\nagreement in place by Aug. 1, 1998.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The loans represent about 70 percent of the total investment<br>\nin the project to be developed over the next five years. The<br>\nremaining 30 percent is equity provided by Thames Water.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;These facilities together with money already invested or<br>\ncommitted by our shareholders will be used in both the<br>\nrefurbishment and expansion of the treatment and distribution<br>\nfacilities for clean water services in our supply region,&quot; Hurcom<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The loans not only reflect our commitment to the water<br>\nproject, but they also demonstrate the tremendous support of the<br>\ninternational financial community to Thames&apos; ability to manage<br>\nthe project efficiently and professionally,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The firm announced a Rp 150 billion (US$10.8 million)<br>\ninvestment for pipe refurbishment last month.<\/p>\n<p>All of the investment will be used during the next five years<br>\nto meet the target of supplying clean water to 70 percent of the<br>\narea&apos;s population, up from 52 percent at present; reduce<br>\nnonrevenue water to 35 percent; and to increase water pressure up<br>\nto 7.5 meters within 10 years.
